First Apollo Gigs
Gerri Hershey, "Rolling Stone" (1986)
After a lot of phone calls, I wound up in a Bronx housing project visiting Anna Wilson, a friendly, generous woman who put up the entire family Jackson when they did their first Apollo gigs. We were talking about how bitty Michael sat in her lap at the Boston Road Ballroom, an R&B joint in the Bronx, when Mrs. Wilson's aged mother, a woman known as Coco, turned from her soap opera.
"Boy loved his waffles, is all I know."
"Pardon?", I said.
"Loved *my* waffles. Got *my* Michael safe in my head. Don't know who-all that boy is in the sparkly soldier suits."
